Helping To Lower Obesity: What You Can Do

October 24, 2017
The headlines came out about two weeks ago:  “Obesity Rates Hit an All Time High”.  The percentage of adults in the US with a body mass index (BMI) over 30 has gone from 30 in 2000 to almost 40 today.  About 18.5 percent of children are now obese, versus 13.9 percent in 2000.
So what’s the good news?  What the headlines leave out is that, compared to two years ago, rates have not climbed.  Obesity seems to be leveling off.  That’s KIND of good news, but it is still not showing the dive in rates we need to see as a country getting healthier.  I am encouraged by the flattening of the curve, however.
So what can YOU do to help?  Get the word out to as many people as possible that sugar and carbs have no place as the cornerstone of a healthy diet, that fat does NOT make you fat (quite the contrary), and that change is possible, in spite of the propaganda from the soda industry and the continuing demonization of fat by some in the health field.
Those of you who have changed your food choices and have seen the pounds come off and your blood pressure/blood sugar/cholesterol (yes, even that) numbers improve:  congratulations!  You are a positive example and can show others the way out of a downward health spiral.  You inspire me as I know you inspire your family and friends.
So keep it up!  Let’s look forward to seeing better numbers coming out in a couple of years.
